Thanks for posting this up Jim, it's the only clip I've seen of Hortense.
More importantly, great to have a web site dedicated to her. The My Space blogs were an interesting read, clearly you are the right man for the job.
The first record I heard by Hortense Ellis was "Watering" as played by The Ranking Miss P on Radio One back in the mid-eighties. Of course it isn't actually credited to her. My next exposure would have been when I picked up the wonderful Heartbeat Studio One compilation on Alton & Hortense when it came out. I really wouldn't mind at all if some more of her 1970's output appeared on reissue.
I have a CD-R of Hortense Ellis performing live in Canada in the nineties - just give me a shout if you haven't heard it.

Thanks for your kind comments Freddy C. The documentary from which this clip is taken plays for over an hour and, unfortunately, includes (Channel 4) commercials. It must be said that had I not been a part of the Pama Forum, I never would have gotten my hands on the documentary "Stir It Up". Some incredibly kind people on there. Uploading a tune or a video clip is one thing; but burning a DVD for a virtual stranger is rather amazing. Interesting first exposure to Hortense's music you had, and I am amazed that "Watering" got played on Radio 1. Her own daughter Joy (now 47) had never heard the song until I included it on a private "Best Of Hortense Ellis" compilation created and posted to her as a Christmas surprise. I hope that I won't make too many enemies on here by pointing out that just as Ike Turner was a brilliant musician, but beat the shit out of Tina, so whereas Alton Ellis is a brilliant singer, performer and producer, he has, over the years, destroyed the Ellis family financially for his own financial benefit (Hortense died penniless and her body lay four weeks in a mortuary because there was no money for a funeral). I was "behind the door" at the time Hortense died and so was unable to do anything. If you're still with me, Freddy C. I would be VERY interested in the Canadian live performance you speak of. I've never heard it. If anybody wants to hear Hortense singing four Christmas songs, head over to the MySpace anytime up to 1 AM GMT on the 28th.

no you won t make enemies, jim , but maybe too much information on this occasion
we - here and at chatty mouth - are really just fans of the music, the people making it and their private lives are of zero interest other then their health
alton ellis is to me anyway the greatest living jamaican singer and one of the four or five greatest of all time
we just don t want him to lose his life prematurely

That is a very kind gesture mse (sorry I don't know if you're M or F). I do not need the LP myself but I know that Hortense's daughter, Sandy, in Jamaica would love to have it as she has never had any of her mom's LP's/CD's. So many friends in Jamaica needing a little help but I am surviving on JSA myself. Hope you'll get back to me. Hortense tracks can be downloaded from either the website audio player or the bigger audio player (halfway down the page) on the MySpace. I do not sell her music - I share it - because she was never properly paid for it in the first place.

What a wonderful voice she had. I feel quite sad. Didn't realise she had passed away!

Was never over mad on her stuff but the one track I really rate is the Gussie's 7" cut of "Unexpected Places" which carries a kicking version on the flip.
