Me neither. I haven't played that album in ages but I suppose I should be happy that a longer compilation has surfaced from Hearbeat.

It's harder to be so enthusiastic when you bought the original short issues of all these expanded editions about fifteen years ago.

I do get drawn into that 'buy it again' trap sometimes.

I wish they would fix their horrible Slim Smith cd that was missing a track and could easily be expanded with bonus tracks to boot.

That would have been a nice idea but won't probably happen : last year HB released that 5 The Hard Way comp which featured some selected tunes from albums they won't re-press. Slim Smith is one of them. His name most certainly doesn't ring much of a bell amongst the younger JA music fans Tell them about U Roy, Dennis Brown...OK ! Tell them about Slim S, Delroy Wilson and similar artists who didn't build their career on a rasta tip, and the result is often quite clear : they don't know them much, though they may be familiar with some re-cuts of their original riddims.
Commercially speaking, such a reissue doesn't mean much nowadays and it's a sad thing.
Slim 's output at Studio 1 wasn't that huge but the following tunes could have been added (thanks to RKR, maybe there are more) :

Try Again
Look Who's Back Again (w/ D Wilson) (available on several comps)

Freddy, i usually manage to re-sell or exchange the first HB version . It pays at least half on the new version OR i give it to friends of mine who need to be properly educated when it comes to JA music history. It doesn't bring bring any financial reward but frienship also brings its own sorts of rewards, priceless, imho !

Chris/Heartbeat didn't really deceive, they said their releases were from the master tapes, which they were, it's just that often Coxsone gave them tapes that had been overdubbed/remixed since the original single release. For this release they probably aren't using tape on many of those tunes, but instead cleaning up original copies of the vinyl. They'll get knocked either way - the sound won't be as good from the cleaned up vinyl as it was from the tapes, the tapes don't have the same mix as the old singles. Someone will always be unhappy.

Chicken Scratch

Heartbeat Records re-release their compilation of Lee Perry’s Ska sides recorded for Coxsone Dodd on 29 January.

Titled the Chicken Scratch Deluxe Edition this is an update of the original issue from 1989. Most notably a significant number of the tunes are included in their original form, as released on 7″. On the previous Chicken Scratch release many of the tunes had more modern overdubs on them (these were on the tapes that Coxsone supplied to Heartbeat at the time).

It has to be said that Lee Perry is not the greatest singer to have ever come out of Jamaica and the vocals on some of these tunes are a bit of an aquired taste. All the same there is some real quality and plenty of classic moments on this release and it’s well worth picking up.
