i respect people's wishes and won't post music here. i just want to add that people who say sharing tunes is ripping of artists...if you really check the percent of reggae artist who own their own publishing rights and actually collect royalty payments from ascap etc for cd sales and radio play its dreadfully low number. if you want to support the actual singers and players go see them live buy their merch. and if you get their address send em some funds direct or use something like the reggae old boys society that freddie and them set up for old school destitute artists, so we don't have them as street people like jr byles. I dload reggae that i wont be able to find in a shop and also new reggae to hear if i like it or not. but dloading hasnt stopped me from buying reggae cds and magazines and going to reggae shows etc.. just some food fi thought. a

I've touted material to the following labels: Soundway, Sterns, Retroafrik, SoulJazz, Numero, Honest Jons and individuals such as Steve Barrow, Miles Cleret etc. The stock standard response is: it won't shift sufficient units and CD sales are dead. Fair enough Bedward. I was talking about Reggae, I assume you mean African music? I don't know much about African music and wouldn't want to comment but I know enough about Reggae to be certain that unrestricted distribution of unauthorised copies, inprint or not, damages the business.

apart from an obvious label like Studio 1, or people like Prince Buster - who does a lame work with reissues or at least uses a very bad strategy ! - one must bear in mind that the main label involved in reissuing 60's JA music is - was ? - Trojan : let's face it, how many artists made some money out of those records ? only the label made any decent money, if it's any of our concern. i'll be glad to distribute self-made comps of material still available from artists i like but not everyone might know, a thing that already i do which enables friends to get to know artists, thus being a personal way of promoting the music.

Tim- you make a good point- I had not thought of the fact that some of our well-intentioned trading could end up on Flea Bay... I guess you actually have to see that happen before it comes to mind. Some people have no integrity
