Personally I think it would be a shame to turn this into a forum for trading unauthorised copies but then again you proabably all knew I thought that anyway...

We all certainly have our thoughts on this- I think it is fine to trade out if print as the artists are nt hurt in that...however, I guess it s up to the new moderator, who still remains a mystery

This is TimP talking from work - couldn't login so I've created a 2nd account - sorry for any confusion...
I'm sorry to have to go about this at great length but it is something I feel pretty strongly about. I used to trade stuff quite widely but a couple of things happened that made me think again...
First of all someone was selling compilations I had been involved in on ebay - this was totally not in the spirit they were produced and it made me regret distributing stuff quite so widely with no real control over who had access to them. It's one thing giving a CD to a mate but unrestricted distribution obviously brings out the vultures.
Secondly I think we have to consider the fact that hopefully unreleased music won't stay unreleased forever. If it's widely distributed in an unauthorised form then this could potentially hurt sales of official releases. If you want evidence for this there was a post from someone on the Chatty Mouth board who said they wouldn't be buying a new Studio One set on Soul Jazz as they already had all the tunes through downloading/trading. I want to encourage people to buy tunes not put them off! - clearly this is not achieved by distributing stuff in this way.
I don't have a problem with mixed tunes/tunes on radio shows/sound tapes etc as your much more likely to want to go out and buy a tune if you hear it in this format.
Thats it. I understand that people have different opinions and don't want to lecture anyone. It's just that chatty mouth turned into little more than a unauthorised traders club at one point. I'd hate to see that happen here too as it's something I just can't support.

What about material that sits lying about in people's collections and that will never make a commercially viable release?

Sorry - this is a vaguely related digression.
Someone (not a Chatty Mouther) copied me a CDR of the first Candi Staton album on Honest Jons.
In the end I went and bought a copy as it was SO good I couldn't help but show some financial appreciation.
Admittedly this is rare.
(None of which moves this debate forward of course.)
Respect

well there's a good point in there John. Candi Staton is still around and involved in those Honest Jons releases so she would benefit from your buying it. That's when I try not to copy or get copies is when it's an artist who puts out his own CD like BB Seaton's Anthology or a new CD like Hot 8. I'd sooner just buy these and have better Karma. I get alot of oldies for nothing.

What about material that sits lying about in people's collections and that will never make a commercially viable release? How can we be sure it won't be released Bedward? Ten years ago there was a huge amount of 60's/70's material that had not been re-issued a significant amount has come out since then.

Respect Baldy But someone giving you a CDR is different than making it available to x amount of people on the internet. If that CDR had been widely distributed it's safe to say (IMO) that at least some people who received it would have kept this copy and not purchased the original. We have to remember that most people who consume music have no real affinity to the packaging, owning the genuine article etc - they just want to hear the tunes.

I've touted material to the following labels: Soundway, Sterns, Retroafrik, SoulJazz, Numero, Honest Jons and individuals such as Steve Barrow, Miles Cleret etc. The stock standard response is: it won't shift sufficient units and CD sales are dead.
