i'm not sure either, artful one, but i do know that any UK selector worth his salt does more to keep dennis's memory alive than any other passed artist including bob marley. rodigan co-pilot papa face is a good example, he loves d brown to the bone & i have yet to hear him play a set in 80 plus times hearing him without at least one DEB.
Why ?
Because dennis's music above all other got black britons through some very dark times, tunes like 'revolution' ('are you ready to get up and fight like soldiers') were as much a call to arms as 'police and thieves' ; 'wolves and leopards' and 'here i come' offered considerable comfort also and, when it was rub up time, tunes like 'let me down easy' (my own favourite DEB) 'silouettes' and, later 'your love has got hold over me' 'mek man rub pleat off a gal skirt' as they say. it goes without saying that the girlies loved him too.
dennis spent many years living in london, i believe penny reel wrote rather a good book chronicling this, and of course he has children here. i listened to a tribute show on a landmark anniversary (what would have been his 50th birthday i think) and one of his daughters rang in, audibly moved, to thank people for keeping her father's memory alive.
personally dennis is not one of my 'closest' singers, a matter of bewilderment to my friends ringo and mr longtime, but lord knows i love his music.
the tunes mentioned above would cover my top 5.

There's a tune from the mid 80's I'm very keen on - I'll mention it after I've ordered it from Lion Vibes. ;D I didn't see it about at the time and I don't want someone beating me to it.

Thanks MSE- I thought it might be some sort of anniversary of an event because he was all over, but all that information is appreciated, and stuff I did not know about being on this side of the pond. I think I will have to re-visit what I have with that perspective when I get home tonight

DEB simply a great singer who recorded loads of great tunes with many great producers- Studio 1, Niney, Joe Gibbs, Gussie Clarke etc etc... so many tough tunes, one of the foundation stones of reggae music imho...
